HB 684: COUNTY SHERIFFS – Adds to existing law to authorize a sheriff’s office to seek reimbursement for costs of recapture.
This bill adds a new section to Idaho law allowing county sheriffs to seek reimbursement from the Department of Correction for costs of traveling out of state to recapture prisoners, probationers, or parolees who absconded. Eligible costs include travel, personnel, overtime, and other reasonable expenses. The Department must budget for these costs annually and pay valid invoices within 30 days. The law is now in effect as of July 1, 2026. It passed both chambers unanimously after Senate amendments clarified reimbursement details.
