SB 1227: EDUCATION – Adds to existing law to establish provisions regarding generative artificial intelligence in public education.
SB1227 creates a new Chapter 70 in Title 33 of Idaho Code to guide the use of generative artificial intelligence in K-12 public schools. The State Department of Education must develop a statewide framework emphasizing safety, transparency, privacy, and human oversight. Local school districts and charter schools are required to adopt their own AI use policies that follow the framework and all relevant privacy laws. The bill also directs development of AI literacy standards for students, assessment guidelines, educator professional development recommendations, and resources for parents. No new state funding is required. The law became effective on July 1, 2026.
