SB 1336: EDUCATION – Amends and adds to existing law to revise and establish provisions regarding civics education.
SB1336 revises Idaho's civics education rules. Secondary students must now earn two credits each in American history and American government with strong civics emphasis. The bill requires teaching specific virtues, republican principles, a long list of founding-era documents, Western civilization history in 8th grade by 2030-2031, and instruction contrasting American government with communism and fascism. New standards for history, government, and social-studies materials mandate patriotism, primary sources, factual accuracy, and moral character development. The mandatory civics test is delayed until the 2027-2028 school year. The law took effect July 1, 2026 after passing both chambers with amendments.
